I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! I've been busy, and haven't sat down to post in ages. Tonight, though, I want to tell about how I conquered my ironing board.
Before I get to that, look at my surprise super awesome present from my husband! I am now the proud owner of a Canon Rebel T1i.
On to the ironing board. It's been stuck in the "up" position for the better part of a year, when the lever came out. I did a little searching online, because I couldn't see immediately how to put it back in, and got frustrated with the results. The "hire someone," and "just buy a new one (several times if needed)" attitude was a little irritating. Not to mention wasteful in the second case. It turns out it's not that difficult, it was just hard to see the mechanism!
If you just need to see where the lever goes, look at the last picture.
Otherwise here is an illustrated guide to replacing the lever in an ironing board.
This is what it looked like when the board was stuck open. You can see the metal plate covering the horizontal beam, making it hard to see anything except the vertical rod which has notches on the top (from use)
This is what the mechanism looks like, once it's been collapsed slightly. You can see the ratchet design, the plate with a spring underneath. The plate has an oval opening with the spring pushing it up, but when you press in the direction of the arrow, it becomes a circle, allowing it to move. This is why it will open but not close, in this case.
Here is a shot looking at the open board again. The arrow points to that same plate, which needs to be pushed toward the flat end of the ironing board with a screwdriver (or the original lever, which worked for me)
Once you get it open, here is where the lever gets put back. The dotted line shows the lever behind that horizontal bar.
This is how I made sure the lever wasn't going to fall out again. I think the small tab to the left of my pliers was supposed to hold it in place, but with both of them covering the lever, it should stay in place.

Me Too.Thanks for the description and the photos. Like yours, the lever dropped out and I did not notice how it had been set. I tried a couple of positions that did not work but your solution was terrific.
OMG, you absafreakinlutely rock!! You by far have the best step by step to fix this. I read your post and minutes later...... fixed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Thanks for the pics and description. I had to read it a few times but I finally got it:) Thanks for saving me a lot of hassle!
Hooray! Thanks so much. This was really helpful. Putting the lever a lot of trial and error. Maybe you could show a better? angle of how it fits back in.
THANK YOU!!! i was getting really fed up with the "throw it away" mentality or find a guy to fix it. i can now iron again from my wheelchair.
thank you for this awesome post!! you make things go round :D
Clearly this is a common problem. Glad to know I'm not alone. Thanks for the "tute." Just seeing where the stupid thing went helped a lot.
Simply Brilliant!
I was in no mood to sort this one out, I did actually get it replace right first try but as everything was bent out of line....it simply failed to function.
Thanks for the guidance....now everything is back to specs the lever fits and works.
Again...brilliant!
My best guess is that you'll be getting thanks for this for many, MANY years to come! After 20 minutes of fiddling with the board, I decided to look online before quitting. This was incredibly helpful! Thanks SO SO much!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! As with some of the other people that commented on this, I was having the most difficult time trying to fing someone that would actually help me! I also was mad that everyone just kept saying "go buy a new one" and even giving me step-by-step instructions on how to find an ironing board in wal-mart! I am a 19 year-old newlywed and cannot afford to just go out and buy a new thing everytime it breaks. Plus, it's such a waste! It wasn't broken, the only thing that happened was that the lever fell out. I can't thank you enough! I'll be sure to come to you for other things too :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the very helpful information. I just bought a new ironing board and the handle fell off right away. I read your post, and it was fixed in no time. This was awesome.
Thanks for your pics...just fixed the identical board for me wife. Regards, Rich in Vancouver, BC
Thank you! followed your detailed instructions (goog pics) and it worked :)
Thank you so much!! My board has been stuck open with the lever off for over 1 year. I'm moving in a few weeks and was determined to get it closed. Your ironing board was identical to mine and your directions worked perfectly! Plus the lever is now functional. Thanks again!!
Honestly, I really want to thank you for posting your detailed (with pictures) instructions. My husband's solution was to throw the ironing board while I was away. I stumbled upon your blog and in seconds, I was able to close the board. Thank you again!
THANK YOU!!! I fixed it after much frustration. You saved me!!! Thank you
After much cursing while trying to solve this fabled problem, I finally stumbled across your blog. 5 minutes later- it was fixed. Thanks so much! May I suggest: www.fixironingboard.com ...
Thank you very much! We have tried dozens of times to flatten an old ironing board. I was going to put it out in the trash and now the board has new life.
Hey thank you! I think this is the only step by step on the Internet. Our board's been broken for months, and your steps really did it! Thanks!!
Fantastic!! I wish your blog came up as the first search on Google. Thank you for the clear directions, the pictures, and the gumption to know that you were not the only one to go through this.
After 7 months, the ironing board is now compact again. I really appreciate your time and help. Well done!! :-)
Sincerely,
Fan of The Crafty Redhead
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
This was beyond helpful!!!!
Thank you!!! I was getting frustrated and your pics helped a bunch!!
you are awesomeness defined! thanks so much for your help.
Your instructions are awesome! After living with my open ironing board for several months I can finally put it away in the closet. Thanks a lot!
Goodness gracious! You have done a beautiful job with this! The internet can be a powerful source of knowledge. 2010 and I am finally realizing this. Thank you!
Thank you so much for help. My ironing board stood in my house for a week and on one can fix it. Your post is very very helpful!!
Luckily I got your post the day my MOM!!! got my ironing board stuck :-)
Thanks to your amazing description I was able to get it unstuck quickly.
THANK YOU !!! i was tryng to getting this fixed for almost a month and was on theverge of buying a new one. Googled one last time and this is the best description available to fix on Google !! Simple and Effectve !!!
Totally just fixed my ironing board using this blog. Thank you!
Very nice write-up... Your description of the mechanism was spot-on. That and the pictures allowed me to fix my board. I had beaten by another board, for the same reason in the past.
THANK YOU!!!! You saved my day.
I am a fix it person and I got soooo frustrated when my ironing board got stuck in the up position and I just COULD NOT fix it. Thank you soooooo much for taking the time to explain and post those excellent pictures. You did a fantastic job.
Thank you so much! I've been sharing an apartment with 4 engineering students for a year, and the only person that could get the ironing board closed was one of the girlfriends.
Now I'll be able to do it too!
Thank you so much for creating this post! The pictures really helped me figure out the whole process. Once you see the process, it seems rather simple.
You are great! You saved me about $15 in less than an hour's time. Cheers to you.
I love that you have a website with how to fix this, but am finding it impossible to follow your directions. You have one picture where the board is fully opened, and the next where it has been collapsed a little. I am unable to collapse mine (it looks identical to the one in picture). How did you manage to go from one step to the next?
Thank you so much. You saved my life. I had that thing open, standing in my house and taking my space for 2 weeks now. You are the best!!!!
Thank you so much! I'll give it a tray. Beautifully written and demonstrated.
Thank you very much. I'll give this a shot. Wonderful instructions and pictures.
Excellent description !! Solved my problem
FANTASTIC!! My daughter had been wrestling with the open ironing board for days before having to move out of her apartment. On moving day we decided to take it to the dumpster but before we did searched the web for help . . . and found your wonderful step by step instructions. You are the best.
Um....you just saved me from having to buy a new board!!! thanks a ton!!!! :)
LOVE IT! Fixing my ironing board became a matter of principal. The stupid comments (find a man!) were infuriating since my smart, hunky husband couldn't fix it. Thanks for the SIMPLE, CLEAR instructions!
AMAZING! I have felt the frustration that each user here has felt, and now the satisfaction of fixing my POS ironing board! And with the pliers I thought I'd never use, this piece of junk is actually bent to be better than it was before. Take that, shoddily made Wal-Mart crap! You are now permanently functional!
Hope you won't mind if I link from my facebook, to help others deal with the problem!
Thank You so much being a man i know sometimes it takes a woman to turn a mans head the right way. my wifes ironing board handle fell off i tried and tried to figure out how to put in back. if it hadn't been for you i was going to use it as a surfboard. thank you so much
I have to say this has been an issue of mine for at least three months.... And you helped me solve it!!! Thanks for the post. You have done a good dead to mankind.
Thanks so much for the repair instructions. Vedddddy in-terrrrr-esting, that you have the exact same ironing board as I. Wonder if there might be some design flaw? It's been in rigor mortis leg-up position on the family room floor for days. You are smart to devise a way to make sure the lever won't fall off again. Can't wait to bring my board back to life.
Wonderful help! Thank you very much. And congratulations for your digital SLR!
Thank you so much, was really helpful in my case as well
Thank you so much! This blog is precious!
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much. A picture is worth a thousand words and your illustrations are deffinitely worth that and more. I have the same board pictured. Is a you tube vid to follow?
This is absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much for thinking to post this. You saved my ironing board...as well as my wallet. Very useful. Thanks!
Umm.... Hello? Can we get this woman an award please? Holy crap, what I couldn't fix myself in two weeks, you were able to remedy in literally thirty seconds. THANK YOU!!!
Thank you for sharing this. Didn't know it was such as easy fix, considering my board was stuck open for sometime now!
I have also added some additional pics and a quick summary here:
http://gansvv.blogspot.com/2010/09/fixing-ironing-board.html
THANK YOU! I'm so glad I found your post. It saved me the hassle of trying to exchange it without a receipt, or adding to the landfill - which feels horrible. I expect it to last a really long time, now. Thanks again!
Thanks so much for posting this! My ironing board was in the open position for 5 months now. I couldn't bare getting another ironing board when I knew that it could be fixed easily. Thanks again.
thanks so much for posting this! it's the most comprehensive guide to the problem that i could find. fixed my board in a matter of minutes with your pictures!
so helpful!! thanks
you are awesome! having that board in the up position for months just drove me crazy. thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your step by step instructions on how to fix my ironing board. You would have thought there would be more info on how to do this. Thank you again, you are a lifesaver.

Just awesome! 6 sites later I finally found your site which fixed the problem in 3 minutes. THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Thank you for the help! I am a penny pincher and loved that you helped me fix this. I am very mechanically inclined, and couldn't figure this one out. All the other sites said to take it apart and I knew that would be the end of the ironing board. They are not expensive, but you should only have to buy one in a lifetime!
Thank you very much for your post.
I almost tried 3 hours to fix the lever but failed all the times. Your post is wonderful and helped to fix it 5 minutes. I am going to share this link to one of my friend who is also having similar problem. Once again thank you very much for your post.
This was a big help. Thank you!
Thank you so much. I tried for a while to get the ironing board to close and was about to give up and discard it. I figured I would do a search on the internet and came across your post. I had it fixed in two minutes thanks to you.
Thank you sooooo much!! I accidentally broke my friend's ironing board where the lever came out back in June. We both tried fixing it and I felt terrible so I just gave her the money for a new one and I took the broken one instead of throwing it out (I knew it could be fixed just didn't know how).
It is funny how such an easy fix can be so frustrating when you don't know where that one piece goes! It's also funny how after all these years, ironing board manufacturers don't think (or care) to include what to do when this happens...
Yesterday I tried looking it up on youtube to no avail, lol, but I googled and found similar questions that led to this site.
This was an awesome help! So glad that you were kind enough to share your wisdom!!! Can't wait to tell my friend too ;)
Thanks again!
Thank you! I just fixed my board too. :)
~J
Thank you very much! My boyfriend worked on it for 30 minutes then I read your blog and got it in 2 minutes!
Thank goodness for your post! It's so obvious now! Cheers! I can finally store my ironing board again!
Thank you SOOO much for your post. I was dreading the thought of wasting a perfectly good ironing board just because I couldn't close it. Thank you!!!
excellent and most helpful. thank you so much for sharing this.
OMG! I Just spent an hour in frustration fighting my ironing board, then another looking for solutions online. All were useless until I found yours! your post was seriously the most helpful and easily understood "how to" I've ever read! love you!
I have to say I am a guy who enjoys fixing things and was so frustrated to have our new ironing board break and I couldn't figure our how to fix it! You rock and I am envious of your intellect in figuring out how simple it was to fix. You deserve all the gratitude everyone is giving you and more. THANK YOU!
P.S. It seems this is a common problem and you could make a little money by getting companies to pay for advertising on this site. Just have them look and how many posts you have.
lol Its crazy to see the number of people this post as helped. 5 minutes ago I became one of them. This dmn ironing board had been up for over a month but now its neatly tucked away =)
Bless Your Heart, my son pulled the handle out of mine and we had no clue on how to fix the thing, but my searching led me to you and it is now fixed God Bless You, you are truly doing Gods work because even the little things help like fixing a crazy ironing board they could be a thorn in you side if you can't let it down! Thanx a Bunch!
Life saver!!! That's all I can say. Thank you. I was sure it didn't just break off and could be fixed without wasting money.
thank you so much!!
So my husband decides he's going to iron his shirt and when he went to put the board away, he tried forcing the level in the wrong direction and broke it. After 10 min of frustration trying to fix it, he was on his way to throw the whole thing away! I jumped on the internet and found your directions and presto!....we fixed it. Thank you!!
I don't know how you figured this out but I followed your instructions and was soooo happy I fixed my ironing board!!! Yeah, it would be easy to go buy a new one but there is too much waste in this world so it feels so good not to have to throw something out! Of course also not to mention that I'm all proud of myself and can't wait to show my family that i actually fixed something. Thanks so much!
Awesome. Worked perfectly! thank you the most.
You rock!
I could not figure out how in the World to put the lever in the darn thing and thanks to the magic of the blogosphere and your clear pictures and explanations... Voila, I saved $15! Less waste to put in a landfield!
Great directions. Thank you!
THis was the only site I could find that really answered the problem. GO for it, girl!
My wife said, "Can you help me with something?" Little did I know what was in store for me with this stupid ironing board. I couldn't figure out how this was engineered and it was driving me crazy. "How could the handle get pulled out??" I asked. Anyways, after struggling with it for a short time, I knew the internet must have the answer, an viola! Found your pictures. Awesome job! Thanks!! I couldn't have been the hero without you!

Ok I slow witted for like a half an hour trying to figure out WTF to hit with the screw driver.....then i hit the right thing and the leg slid to me fast.....then trying to figure out how to place the lever back....this is ingeniously defective design.....but the board is now back to normal....THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU !!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much. This was really helpful as I have an ironing board that has been up for about 5 months.
Thanks a bunch for this great description of how to fix an ironing board!!! My husband had tried to fix ours and he can fix just about anything. He was really impressed when I showed him that I had fixed it myself!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd like to know what FOOL invented this mechanism in the first place, and thank God for the Internet and YOU!!! Thanks again!!
Brilliant! I was pondering how to fix the same problem and couldn't bear the waste of getting a new ironing board, nor could I stand not being able to put the thing away. Thanks to your useful phots I got if fixed in 5 minutes!
THANK YOU! My darling husband of eight months is happy but embarrassed. He spent a long time on it, and I got it in the first try after reading your post. Don't worry. He'll get over it.
OMG!!! Thank you sooooo much!! It was frustrating having a non collapsible ironing board!! Google was coming up with nothing, until I ended up here at your blog, which saved me! THANK YOU!!
I've only been living in with an open ironing board in my dining room for the past 2 weeks. Thank you! Thank you! :)
Thanks so much for this! Somehow my lever fell off and was lost in a cross-country move. I was afraid I was never going to get my board closed, so I hit Google and yours was the first post I found! :) Easy as pie...
You saved me from going out and buying a new ironing board. I was trying every way but the right way. My wife says it was just in time for ironing the clothes.
OMG!!!! Thank you. While I was trying to put my roommate's ironing board away, that damned lever came out. I didn't want to have to buy her a new one, it had to be fixable! AND IT WAS. Thank you for these very helpful steps. :D
you are a saint. I almost gave up but you saved me. THANK YOU!
TYVM I tried your method and it works
Beautiful! I would almost buy the new one. Arigato (Thank you in Japanese).
Ike

Thanks a lot Kristie. Its helped me a lot. It was staying open from past 6 months, and I could fix it today. Thank you so much.

Brilliant instructions. After reading, it took me two minutes to sort out. Thankyou so much.
Thanks for your help!!
This rocks. Thanks for posting this information. It saved another ironing board from the dumpster.
Another SATISFIED blog reader!!! I let a friend borrow my ironing board and it came back in two pieces.Of course the hubby wanted me to "just go buy another one", but being unemployed I refused to waist needed money on something that wasn't dead. Plus, this board was my mom's and I refuse to part with it.
Thanks a lot for great instructions and taking the time to share all with us
Thank you for posting the solution to fix the collapsible ironing board. Your pictures and description were extremely helpful!

Hit several stupid, non-sense comments for quite sometime before I landed at your blog. This demonstration worked like wonders for me. I am so glad that I did not think too much (though a little) about trashing this one and buying a new one.

hello, I m a foreigner - French - and live in the usa for a few months. The last thing i ever though to encounter is an issue with an American standard ironing board, try to fix it and eventually found this blog that sort me out. Great ! Fantastic useful post that helps probably 1000s people throughout the States . 1000 kisses and thanks !!!

You are one awesome red head !
Thank you! I spent a good 20 minutes trying to do this by feel. The pictures are incredibly helpful and I'm bookmarking this page.
Thank you for taking the pictures and describing how to fix the ironing board mechanism.
As you said, if the lever falls off when the ironing board legs are fully extended, you really can't see what is going on in there.
Thanks again!
Just great! You saved my life and $20 bucks.
Thank u!
Incredible. Not one site that talks about this, and you manage to help out of this crisis! I feel like I should pay you.
Thanks for taking the time to make this post. It totally helped me out.
Fab!!! I've been poking around that plate for half an hour before looking online. Just in case someone else had been as crazy and determined to fix it as me ;-) THANK YOU!
Kim

Thanks for the post; fix the same board a couple years back by accident. Lever fell out in open position this time. My wife enjoyed watching me fight with this dawn ironing board and I circum to the internet. What did we do years ago? Thanks again
21 months later, it's still helping people. thanks!
By all the comments Im sure you can see how relevant your post was. Thanks again from another one who you saved from buying a new ironing board. My husbands gonna be jealous I fixed it! haha (I can only hope) :D Thanks again!
- Chelly
Omgsh, I love you for this! I've been running around the house playing Miss Fix-it all day. This one had me stumped. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to post this, it was the only diagram that helped me! From one handy lady to another, I seriously appreciate you.
This is the single most useful page on the web.
Thank you, this wasn't as easy to find on the web as most fixes, thank you so much for posting it! Pat
This was so helpful thank you
Thank you from one more appreciative fixit guy. I don't think I have ever seen so many thanx for an explanation .
I do wonder why no one has taken the entrepreneurial opportunity to sell a better ironing board. This many problems means the current product is garbage.
Thanks! Worked for me. I impressed my wife.
wow i had my iron board open for months... and now it was fixed in a min...thanks a ton for the detailed explanation!
Ah! Thank you very much! My board was taking up entirely too much space open and your instruction worked like a charm.
Thank you!!! Our open ironing board wasn't exactly enhancing our bedroom decor for last I don't know how many months. Thanks for sharing the solution with the world!!
Thanks!!!
Thank you so much for this! My cheap ironing board broke while I was moving. I asked my boyfriend to fix it, but he kept putting it off. I got fed up with seeing it standing there all the time, and after many searches, I found your blog! This post was a sanity saver for sure!
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I fixed my sister's ironing board just now after a half hour of frustration. You've probably cost a factory in China a million dollars in lost revenue with your helpful guide.
Thanks a lot. The information is really priceless.
I was bumping into my board for weak before I stumbled on your blog
THANK YOU!!!!!
Kids decorated the house today for my wife who is coming home from a trip to visit her sick brother. They wanted it to be perfect but broke the ironing board handle off in the process. I fixed it in two minutes with your help. You're awesome!!!
Another satisfied customer..lol Thank you!
It's almost 2 years since you've posted this and I'm sure it's helped hundreds. Thank you!!
Thank you so much! I knew it had to be a simple mechanism but while it was stuck in the open position, I couldn't see in there to figure it out. You're my hero!
THANK YOU!!!! so frustrated this morning when I needed to iron and found it stuck; my hubby didn't tell me that the last time he used it it broke. I fixed in in 10min or less! You rock! You saved another one from the trash!
Great ! Very helpful to fix my iron board lever in few minutes.
I just fixed my ironing board. I had spent a long time before and then didn't have any more chunks of time to give it. It has been decorating my bedroom floor for 3 months--through the Christmas season when floor space is precious already with 4 kids and hubby's gifts piled high. thank you for the wonderful pictures--for those of us who are so very visual, and for the written directions. worked for me!!!!!!!
THANK YOU!! THANK YOU! My husband was about to throw out our ironing board, but I googled how to fix it and was sent here. He fixed it in 5 minutes. Thanks again for your time and great tutorial.
Well, another ironing board (mine!) fixed thanks to your blog. You have helped many ironing boards, obviously, from being thrown into our landfills unnecessarily. Ours was broken by a "helper", who it turns out lied about how she broke it. I found the lever in the part of the mechanism that moves, so obviously she had muscled it, the lever came out, & she put it back wherever she could cram it in. Thanks to your blog, I fixed the ironing board and discovered her deceit. We won't be having her back again!
are you dumb?!!?
this is another shite peice of time-wasting crap!!! i need help with the ironing boards' legs coming off not the freakin lever...any advice, thanx
same ere, dude if you find any info-help me out too;)
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm married to a Rocket Scientist, and he couldn't fix the ironing board. I used my pink tool kit to get the job done!!!
It's love at first fix! Mwah! agoldlife aka Azelia Stokes :)
Me vs The ironing board is exactly how I felt!!! I had already lost several rounds when I was out for the count, when I thought, just maybe I am not the only one that has had this problem.Got on line and found your site.I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to post the step by step instructions along with pictures. I did have to read them a few times(too much in a hurry)but it worked!!!! fyi my ironing board is older and looked a little different but your instructions did it. Thank you so much.
Thank You!
I have a much older model board, but the basic mechanism has not changed in all these years. I was faced with a metal lever completely out and the board looking like an upside down stork. It took some metal bending, rebending and pounding, but the lever is now reinserted and the board works like new. Your analysis of the secret to movement made it happen. Nowhere else did I find it. Thanks Much! I have a picture if anyone wants it.
Thank you SO much for posting this blog with such descriptive pictures! After about 30min of messing with my board I came across this post and viola! It took me about 2min to fix it!! You're awesome!
Thank you so much - you really do rock! After days of not being able to fold the board back up after the lever fell out, I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out where it would go. I gave up and as a last resort I googled the problem and your post helped me sort it out in minutes :) Thanks for the great pics and the easy explanation
Great instructions. FYI I made a video that demonstrates the same instructions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wXlYj_RB38
Thank you so much!your post was very helpful and thanks so much for the step by step illustrations. You saved me from my second iron board becoming a permanent fixture of my bedroom.
Thank you so much!!! I was getting so frustrated with my ironing board that I almost bought a new one! Thank you!
I too am amazed. I've had that d--n ironing board open for a year or two, and tonight, tonight, I closed it with your help. However, it a fit of pique last year I threw away the lever that had fallen out. Now must I live with a screwdriver hanging from the ironing board?
Thanks for saving me $15!! : ). I did the same thing you did, bent down the other metal pieces to be sure the darn thing stays in place. I had my ironing board open for close to a year, what a waste of space x)
You rock! I'll have it back before the landlady puts me on her blacklist. Thanks!!
Kim,
Thanks for saving me wasted time in figuring it out. Photos were a noice touch.
The pictures were a great help. I've been living in two states, one with a broken ironing board that I just didn't have time to fool with. I can now iron in both places....
Wait....is that a good thing?
ANYWAY- - - You totally rock!! Thanks again.

So amazed at how so many people said to throw it away...not realizing it was still in the open position and kinda hard to put in the garbage can or in the car to take to the recycle box...Thank you not only is the ironing board flat and back in it's place on the back of the door, but it works again!!!!
Thanks a lot for that wonderful explanation. After I fixed it, I really could appreciate how the mechanism really worked. It eased the struggle to open and close it as well.Great photos!!! Thanx a ton
